What’s New for the 2018 Jeep Compass?
The Jeep Compass has been around for a decade now, providing a relatively affordable vehicle that blends the interior space and off-road capability of an SUV with the fuel efficiency and drivability of a four-door sedan. The Compass began its second production cycle for the 2017 model year, and there are no major changes on the 2018 model. There are four trims: Sport, Latitude, Trailhawk, and Limited. As the trim optimized for tackling the wilderness and less-than-favorable driving surfaces, the Trailhawk is only available in a four-wheel-drive layout; the others give you the choice between that drivetrain and a front-wheel drivetrain.
Designed and classified as a compact crossover SUV, the 2018 Jeep Compass has two rows of seats to accommodate up to five people. Passenger volume is measured at 126.7 cubic feet. Although the trunk yields 27.2 cubic feet, that can be expanded into the cabin by folding down the rear bench-style seat. You’d need to upgrade to the top-level Limited to get front-seat and steering-wheel heating capability, leather trim with perforated inserts, and 8-way power adjustability and 4-way power lumbar support on the driver’s seat. The Trailhawk stands out with its red interior stitching accents. For power, the 2018 Compass relies on a 2.4-liter inline 4-cylinder Tigershark MultiAir engine, which produces 180 horsepower and 175 lb-ft of torque. The standard transmission on the Sport and Latitude is a 6-speed manual, while the upper-level Trailhawk and Limited get a 9-speed automatic with a transaxle shifter for the option to shift gears manually. Also exclusive to the upper-level trims is auto start-stop technology to eliminate engine idling and consequently boost fuel efficiency. Comfort and convenience features on the 2018 Compass start with features like electronic vehicle-information center, a 3.5-inch monochromatic driver info cluster display, media center electronics storage, push-button engine start, remote keyless entry, Bluetooth connectivity, a Uconnect interface for integrating infotainment functions, and six-speaker audio with a 5-inch touchscreen. Starting with the Trailhawk, there are additions and enhancements like dual-zone automatic climate control, an 8.4-inch touchscreen, Apple CarPlay and Android Auto for smartphone-based control, a one-year SiriusXM satellite radio subscription, and 7-inch color driver info cluster display. Auto-dimming ability on the rearview mirror is exclusive to the Limited. Standard safety features on the Compass include all-speed traction control, four-wheel anti-lock disc brakes, electronic vehicle stability control and roll mitigation, hill start assist, a rearview camera, nine airbags, and an anti-theft system that includes engine immobilization. The Trailhawk is the only trim that comes with hill descent control, and the Limited gets an additional panic alarm to further bolster the Compass’s security mechanism.
